Fire Safety — Advice for owners of remote properties

At a presentation given to Bewerley Parish Councillors in June 2007, Divisional Fire Officer Nigel Philips and Watch Manager, Summerbridge, Neil Gillies from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service made recommendations for fire safety in the local area.

Attending fires in remote locations creates particular handicaps for the Fire Service.
Using a fire at Blazefield on 7 May 2007 as an example of some of these difficulties, recommendations and advice included

• Better directions and signage to isolated areas.
• Better directional instructions from the people at the site of the fire to Fire Service staff coordinating the operation at a central base.
• Better fire detection systems at vulnerable properties.
• Residential sprinklers should be considered for vulnerable properties (retro-fitted, new build and conversions).
• Fire appliances must be able to get within 45 metres of each corner of a building.
• Better information re water supplies in each area, e.g. ponds which could be used in emergencies.

The Fire & Rescue Service is always prepared to offer free advice on fire safety.
Owners of properties in vulnerable and/or remote locations are encouraged to contact them for an appraisal of appropriate safety measures that they could take.
