The Parish Caretaker
The Parish Caretaker is the modern incarnation of the old Parish Lengthsman - a local person employed to do a variety of tasks within a Parish. Traditionally, their role was to maintain roadside verges and drainage, public open spaces and pathways. The Caretaker Scheme
In 2004 the AONB team decided to re-establish Parish Caretakers in Nidderdale AONB. The Caretakers are funded by the Yorks Dales Millennium Trust via the LEADER scheme and by the parish they work in. The tasks the Caretaker undertakes are varied but include:-
Conservation of the AONB:
By maintaining and enhancing landscape features like woods, hedges, walls, stone stiles, stream sides and river banks, wetlands and archaeology. -
Maintenance and improvement of villages,
smaller settlements and the rural surroundings of the
Parish:
By caring for village halls, public open spaces such as roadside verges, village greens, car parks and play areas, and for historic structures like follies, pinfolds, ancient monuments and listed buildings. -
Improving arrangements for access to the
countryside and other facilities that help people to
enjoy and appreciate the Parish:
By improving the condition of public footpaths and bridleways, by installing and maintaining signs and by organising public events and celebrations.
